About the Forum

 

Welcome to a forum that celebrates the power of togetherness, fostering inclusivity and progress as we embark on a journey to reshape Edmonton into a place where everyone feels at home. Step into the vibrant world of the Community Experience Sharing Forum – “Building Inclusive Communities: A Common Vision.” This gathering serves as a dedicated haven where community members and leaders unite to forge connections, exchange wisdom, and tackle a myriad of community issues, interests, and priorities.

Event location and time: Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 8, 2023, as we converge at the Santa Maria Goretti Center in Edmonton, AB (11050 90 Street NW) from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm for this transformative event.

Purpose: Our core purpose is to illuminate the remarkable community development work undertaken by grassroots groups in Edmonton, focusing on their shared vision of cultivating inclusive communities. Beyond that, we strive to create networking opportunities for community leaders, encouraging the building of meaningful relationships and mutual learning.

Goal: Our goal for the day is to foster a strong sense of community, urging participants to share their experiences and forge valuable connections. We hope that every attendee will leave with a profound sense of inspiration, deeply connected to the extraordinary efforts of grassroots groups that are shaping Edmonton into a more vibrant, inclusive, and welcoming city for all. Those who join the event will gain invaluable insights from engaging presentations and activities. Hearing the stories and success of hardworking grassroots groups, everyone will have a newfound motivation to initiate projects that enhance the well-being of their respective communities.

Performances: There will be cultural performances during this event to keep things interesting and fun.

Participants: Anticipate the presence of approximately 30 grassroots community groups, alongside representatives from the community development sector and all three levels of government.

The heart of the forum lies in its presentations and panel discussions, with the following key topics facilitating learning and exploration for all:

We embody the essence of community development, supporting and empowering newcomers in Edmonton and small centers across Alberta towards building an inclusive society with engaged individuals and communities. This group wants to bring Canada’s Bashi community together and feel part of the community in Edmonton. With seed grant support from AHC, they organize events, including biking for health and socializing, cultural dances, and community meals that promote both the physical and mental health of the community members in the city. Bashi Organization’s long-term goal is to foster happiness and unity among all community members in Edmonton.

 

 

 

 

 

 

South Sudanese community realized that their community was facing a crisis in terms of alcohol and drug consumption in some cases, aggression amongst members, criminal activities, negative community environment, a gap in parents and children communication, and challenges in family relationship dynamics which have increased in the recent years. SSCE took the initiative to address these evident issues to help the families and community.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This group envisioned a robust cultural, intercultural, and intergenerational bonds between Slavic & Turkic speaking communities of Edmonton. With this vision, the Kyrgyz Association organized inclusive, community-centered events like cultural activities, yoga 7 swimming sessions, and community picnincs. These gatherings served to cultivate a profound sense of communal identity, reinforce global and cultural connections, and improve both mental and physical well-being.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Built upon years of experience in musical and choir engagement within within senior Chinese communities throughout Edmonton, this group operates within diverse cultural contexts, and is a testament to the power of music. Primarily focused to mend the pain of loneliness experienced by senior members, this group assists seniors of communities within and beyond the senior Chinese populations in coping with issues of isolation, desolation, and dependency.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The community initiative with a mission to connect women of all ages within their community, especially focused on Arab and Lebanese youth, seniors, immigrants, refugees, and those new from different provinces. The CI spread awareness about health and wellbeing, invited knowledgeable experts of the field to educate and listen to the various challenges of participants. The sessions assisted them become stronger together, build a close-knit community, and bridge the gap between generations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This group launched an initiative called ‘Brain of Sierra Leone’ to reconnect youth with their cultural heritage. The initiative’s goal is to build culturally strong youths and instill the skills of teamwork, shared moments, connection to their homeland, and to fortify the bonds that tie generations and families together. It’s a chance for parents to learn with their children. This initiative brings together knowledge, unity, and cultural appreciation, strengthening the ties between generations and families.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Burundi Community of Canada, Alberta chapter is devoted to supporting the community with a multifaceted approach covering education, culture, social engagement, and economic empowerment, contributing to the growth of individuals, families, and Canadian society. They also prioritized building strong connections with Burundian youth, fostering shared learning and collaboration. These efforts promoted unity, cultural appreciation, and empower individuals to excel in their Canadian journey.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This group organized intercultural culinary activities and events that welcome and integrate newcomers, and showcase the culinary culture and heritage of communities. They realized that food is one thing that can connect people quickly and share the feeling of togetherness. Participants of these events can showcase their culinary culture as well as explore other cultures, thus creating a valuable connection and understanding of various culinary cultures around the world.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This initiative by the Eritrean Muslim Community Association Canada is based on a finding that assessed the need to build effective communication between immigrant parents and their Canadian-born children. For this reason, the Community Initiative organized language classes for children aged 6 to 12. The CI focused on teaching their culture, traditions and customs besides language. The Initiative gave an opportunity to children born in Canada to reconnect to their cultural heritage and feel proud of it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

CRIDA has been helping South Asian newcomers studying at various universities in Alberta, particularly those new to the area. They mainly assist the younger members of the community in Edmonton. With the support of the AHC Seed Grant, they have decided to expand their efforts by organizing a speed networking event for professionals of South Asian Background. Their main aim to assist immigrants and newcomers who are trying to find work in their chosen fields have proved successful.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Edmonton Chinese Writing Club (ECWC) consists of grown-up Chinese individuals who have a strong affection for literature and a deep passion for writing. They strive to promote togetherness among people and celebrate different cultures by using the Chinese language for both reading and writing. This initiative by ECWC was inclusive and welcomed everyone with an interest in Chinese literature and writing, as well as culture and traditions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Recognizing a need for women’s engagement, GDS introduced a weekly 3-hour sewing program under the initiative Edmonton Women Sewing Program, which is supported by AHC seed grant. This initiative primarily focused on BIPOC mothers who have chosen to stay at home, aiming to provide them with an avenue for active participation. The CI’s core objective was to empower these women by enhancing their sewing skills and provide a space for them to share their experience and learnings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Congo Canadian Youth Association aimed to combat isolation among young Congolese in Edmonton by fostering inclusivity and support. The Community Initiative promote community cohesion, education, awareness, self-confidence, and reduce isolation through workshops and networking events. With AHC’s assistance, CCYA aims to create a networking platform bridging generational gaps in the Congolese community, connecting diverse age groups.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Guinean Association of Edmonton has realized their children are drifting away from their root culture, language and social connection. They felt that, at times parents have difficulties to spend more time with kids to inculcate cultural values. At times in kids feel ashamed of learning or practicing their culture. To combat these issues Community Initiative seeks to promote community cohesion, education, awareness, and connection to Guinean cultural heritage.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This group got together with the goal of supporting immigrant women from their community. As they immigrate to Canada they realized women face various challenges and find it difficult to blend in the new social or work culture. At times they lose their confidence and they find it difficult to move out of culture shock, language barrier, trauma of parting from families, and coping with parenting challenges. WMEN’s CI is aimed at empowering, growing and uplifting women in such situations.
