On Friday, March 6, Action for Healthy Communities partnered with Lakeland Catholic School District to host a special event focused on belonging, diversity, and student connection.
The goal of the gathering was simple but meaningful: to create a space where every student felt welcomed, safe, and celebrated. By bringing students together, the event highlighted the importance of inclusion, cultural understanding, and community support within Alberta schools.

Throughout the event, students participated in activities that encouraged teamwork and friendship. These moments helped strengthen connections while celebrating the diverse cultures and experiences that students bring to their school community. Each student’s story, language, and background added to a richer and more inclusive environment.
A highlight of the event was a beautiful blessing offered by Fr. René, which helped set a reflective and positive tone for the day. Students also shared prayers in multiple home languages, showcasing the cultural diversity present within the school community and reminding everyone of the importance of respecting different traditions.
Food also brought everyone together, thanks to Remie Pilapil and C.K., who generously provided a wonderful meal. Sharing a meal created an opportunity for students, staff, and partners to connect and enjoy the moment together.

Student leaders played an important role in organizing team-building activities and games that encouraged participation and collaboration. Their leadership helped create a lively atmosphere where students felt comfortable engaging and connecting with one another.
Action for Healthy Communities joined the event as a community partner, connecting with students and supporting the initiative as part of our ongoing work with newcomer youth and families. Partnerships between schools and community organizations help create stronger support systems and more inclusive learning environments.
The event was a wonderful success and a reminder that when communities come together to celebrate diversity and belonging, students feel more confident, connected, and supported. Most importantly, it reinforced a powerful message for everyone involved: Lakeland is a place where students truly belong.
