Number of Hours: (15 hours/week; 2 days/week)

Salary: competitive wage based on qualifications/experience

Contract: January 31, 2019- October 31, 2019

Background

Action for Healthy Communities (AHC) was established in 1995 with the objective to build the capacity of individuals and groups to improve their lives and communities through a unique community building process, including support, mentoring and training. The organization works with all population groups in greater Edmonton area. AHC also works in various elementary schools to provide learning and development support to needy children and their families through an innovative after school program- Healthy Active Community Kids (HACK) program.   To strengthen AHC’s community development support to individuals and groups including HACK program parents we are looking for a Community Animator/Organizer to work with various population groups of Greater Edmonton area to assist them identifying their needs, developing their action plans and find appropriate resources to collectively implement services and projects that serve their communities.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the AHC Community Development Supervisor and HACK Program Coordinator, support the collaboration and partnership of communities and parent core groups, the broader parent community and community partners from numerous public elementary school areas that host the AHC’s after-school program to promote thriving families and communities for their children and themselves. Some roles include:

  • Help design promotional materials and disseminate contact and resource information material
  • Communicate with identified communities and HACK program parents in a timely way to promote their developing networking and mutual support systems
  • Keep records with contact information of outreach work and attach it to monthly activity report

Collaborate with communities and parent core groups to assist their networking, initiatives and support meetings/events including:

  • Help design promotional materials, social media connections, information sharing and networking capability for community/parent core group meetings or events.
  • Assist communities and parent core groups to better communicate and support each other through social media and other means
  • Research, document and possibly develop requested community resources to help parents leverage their initiatives with each other and in the community
  • Provide exchange of information where appropriate with resource providers, school staff and other stakeholders
  • Help identify and invite other community members /parents to community groups/parent groups at the group’s request
  • Keep records with contact information of contact work and attach it to monthly activity report
  • Others as assigned by supervisor

Collaborate with community partners in the development of on-going support strategies and resources for the participating community members/children and their families:

  • Work along with community partners including school staff in areas such as community organizing, accessing community resources and promoting shared strategies
  • Where appropriate assist in applying for financial assistance or grants with community partners and parent groups
  • Research and organize the best practices of other Edmonton parent/child community partners to inform and support community partners and parents

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working in community development or community organization in urban areas
  • Experience working with First Nations, newcomers to Canada or other vulnerable populations
  • Commitment to working and collaborating with community members
  • Strong awareness of  positive community development approaches and poverty alleviation issues
  • Related post-secondary degree/enrolment or a combination of work experience and formal or informal studies
  • Excellent communication skills, spoken and written
  • Show a high degree of initiative, good judgment and resourcefulness
  • Ability to listen and work in a team of people with various backgrounds
  • Able to work some evening and weekend hours                         
  • Good computer and social media skills
  • Access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license

Terms and Conditions of the position

  •  Position is (15 hours/week; 2 days/week)
  • Requires evening and weekend work 
  • This contract position runs for 10 months, from January 31, 2019 – October 31, 2019
  • Remuneration: $23/hour
