Adult Literacy & Skills Development

This project is the result of identified community development needs, as well as individual needs of participants from AHC’s other programs.  AHC offers several learning opportunities:

English Language Learning Classes
Classes focus on improving participants’ speaking, reading and conversational English skills. Activities include field trips around Edmonton in order to practice conversational skills outside the classroom.

Class Schedule 
Level 1 Wednesday & Friday 5-7 p.m.
Level 2 Tuesday & Thursday 6-8 p.m.
Level 3 Wednesday & Friday 6-8 p.m.
Computer Classes
Computer Training Classes focus on the basic computer skills needed for employment. Topics include word processing, spreadsheet applications, using the internet, and emails.

Wednesday 5-8 p.m.
Thursday 5-8 p.m.
Basic Math and Numeracy Classes
Classes focus on basic and intermediate math skills and practical skills needed for everyday life; budgeting, determining grocery costs while shopping, percentages and fractions, and more.

Tuesday & Friday  6-8 p.m.
Literacy Classes for Newcomers

These classes are designed to teach computer skills alongside reinforcing English language learning. The Classes are designed to offer supports for language and computer skills development for Pre-CLB level to mid-level CLB newcomers. Newcomers will receive a total of 32 hours of both classroom instruction and individual self-learning with support from class facilitators.

Classes run during the following period:
  • May to July
  • September to November
  • January to March
